Mind mapping has other names. Check out this site on spidergrams.

http://www.michaelonmindmapping.com/blog/mind-maps/spidergrams-and-mind-mapping-whats-the-difference/

Another term you may run into is bubblegrams.

And, yet another, is spray diagrams. I found this term interesting as it's a "structure of a system at a point in time."

I guess what I am learning is that this idea of mind maps can be used for several things. It can be used as a technique to brainstorm, draw connections between ideas, problem solve, document, or describe. While there are really only subtle differences within all of the terms, it's good to know that mind mapping can be referred to other ways.

What are your thoughts on the differences?

  1. Mickey,

The different definitions are so interesting and helpful. I was curious as to why I have seen different formats and this helps me to clarify the various uses for each type.

  2. Thanks, Mickey. I agree with Jenn's comments that these different definitions are helpful in differentiating various formats. My husband uses what he calls "spiderwebs" with his students and I believe the technical term may be spidergrams!

  6. Hi Bruce,
Thanks. Sue and Jenn and I actually work together and we've been experimenting with mind maps in some of our recent classes. The definitions are helping me a lot too.
